Venus

Frankie Avalon

Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus!
Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus!

Venus, if you will
Please send a little girl for me to thrill
A girl who wants my kisses and my arms
A girl with all the charms of you

Venus, make her fair
A lovely girl with sunlight in her hair
And take the brightest stars up in the skies
And place them in her eyes for me

Venus, goddess of love that you are
Surely the things I ask
Can't be too great a task

Venus, if you do
I promise that I always will be true
I'll give her all the love I have to give
As long as we both shall live

Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus!
Make my dreams come true

Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus!
Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus! Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus!

Notes

“Venus” was written by Ed Marshall and recorded by Frankie Avalon in 1959. “Venus” became a #1 hit.

Frankie Avalon was a teen idol who first gained attention at age 12 as a trumpet player when he performed at a party held for Al Martino, a fellow Italian from Philadelphia. A talent scout at the party arranged for Avalon to appear on Jackie Gleason’s TV show, which led to other national TV appearances.

By the time Frankie Avalon was 17 he was singing with a group and recording teenage songs using a nasal voice.

“Venus” was the first song that Frankie Avalon recorded with his full, non-nasal voice. It had been offered previously to Al Martino who turned it down.

“Venus” is about a man who prays to the goddess, Venus, to bring him an ideal woman.

In the early ‘60’s Frankie Avalon became involved in the nationwide surfing craze. He appeared with Annette Funicello in several beach and surfing movies, including Beach Party, Muscle Beach, and Beach Blanket Bingo.

In 1978 Avalon had a cameo role in the movie version of Grease. He played Teen Angel and sang “Beauty School Dropout.”

In 1987 Avalon reunited with Annette in the film parody of their earlier films, called Back to the Beach.
