Unchained Melody

The Righteous Brothers

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time.
Any time goes by so slowly,
And time can do so much.
Are you still mine?

I, I need your love,
I, I need your love.
God speed your love to me.

Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea,
To the open arms of the sea, yeah.
Lonely rivers sigh, wait for me, wait for me.
I'll be coming home, wait for me.

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered, hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time.
And time goes by so slowly,
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?

I, I need your love.
I, I need your love.
Godspeed your love to me.

Notes

“Unchained Melody” was written in 1955, and first appeared in the 1955 movie, "Unchained." Four separate versions of the song made the Top 40 in 1955. Three of the versions were in the Top 20. Alex North wrote the music and Hy Zaret wrote the lyrics.

The "Unchained Melody" version by The Righteous Brothers is perhaps the best known recording. It was released in 1965 on Phil Spector's Phillies Records label. However, the song was produced by Bill Medley, not Spector. Medley produced it for the album that year and did not intend it to be on a single. Spector put it on a single as the B-side, but radio stations played it instead of the A-side.

The Righteous Brothers duo was Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. Bobby Hatfield sang the lead on “Unchained Melody” because he had a higher voice than Medley.

"Unchained Melody" became a hit again in 1990 when it was included in the film, "Ghost," with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. Hatfield and Medley were no longer earning royalties from the original recording so they re-recorded it and released it. Their new version plus a re-release of their original version both landed in the Top 20 at the same time.
