If I Fell

The Beatles

If I fell in love with you
Would you promise to be true
And help me understand
'cause I've been in love before
And I found that love was more
Than just holding hands

If I give my heart to you
I must be sure
From the very start
That you would love me more than her

If I trust in you, oh please
Don't run and hide
If I love you too, oh please
Don't hurt my pride like her
'cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
cause I couldn't stand the pain
and I would be sad if our new love was in vain

so I hope you see that I
would love to love you
and that she will cry when she learns we are two.

If I fell in love with you

Notes

"If I Fell" was written by John Lennon with some help from Paul McCartney. It was on the UK album "A Hard Day's Night" and was one of the tunes sung by The Beatles during their 1964 American tour.

The song is very unusual for several reasons. For one, it includes an introduction, added after the song was written, that is not musically related to the rest of the song. For another, there is no obvious chorus or bridge section. Also, Lennon and McCartney share a single microphone and sing a two part harmony. Finally, several of the chord changes are difficult and unusual.

The Beatles performed "If I Fell" in their movie, "A Hard Day's Night." Some local kids were used for crowd scenes, one of whom was Phil Collins, 13 years old at the time. However, the take with Phil Collins in the scene was cut, but Collins received a copy of the outtake.

There is a version of the song, the result of an earlier take that was mistakenly used, where McCartney's voice cracks at the end of the line, "And I would be sad if our new love was in vain." This version can be found on "The Capitol Albums" boxed set.
