At Last

Etta James

At last, my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

Oh, yeah, at last
The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clovers
The night I looked at you

I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to rest my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

Oh, yeah when you smile, you smile
Oh, and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine
At last

Notes

"At Last" was written in 1941 for the film "Orchestra Wives" by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren. The Glenn Miller Orchestra performed the song for the movie and recorded it.

The song became a hit for the Miller orchestra and was later recorded by Nat King Cole in 1957 and by Etta James for her 1961 album, "At Last."

"At Last" became the signature song for Etta James and reached number 2 on the R & B chart. The song helped Etta James win induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

The song has been extremely popular with other singers. Among others it has been sung by Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Martina McBride, Lou Rawls, Celine Dion, Eva Cassidy, Christina Aguilera, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Norah Jones, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, and Beyonce.

The film "Wall E" used the song in their trailer and Beyonce sang the song in the film "Cadillac Records." Beyonce portrayed Etta James in the film.

During the 2009 inauguration balls for President Barack Obama, "At Last" was played at each of the 10 official balls that President Obama and his wife, Michelle, attended. Beyonce performed the song live for the President and his wife at the Neighborhood Ball. Beyonce reported that singing the song for the President brought her to tears when she finished.
