I Think I Love You
The Partridge Family
I'm sleeping
And right in the middle of a good dream
Like all at once I wake up
From something that keeps knocking at my brain
Before I go insane
I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed
Screaming out the words I dread:
"I think I love you!" (I think I love you)
This morning, I woke up with this feeling
I didn't know how to deal with
And so I just decided to myself
I'd hide it to myself
And never talk about it
And didn't I go and shout it
When you walked into the room.
"I think I love you!" (I think I love you)
I think I love you
So what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for
I think I love you
Isn't that what life is made of?
Though it worries me to say
That I've never felt this way
I don't know what I'm up against
I don't know what it's all about
I've got so much to think about
Hey . . .
I think I love you
So what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for
I think I love you
Isn't that what life is made of?
Though it worries me to say
That I've never felt this way
Believe me
You really don't have to worry
I only want to make you happy
And if you say, hey, go away, I will
But I think better still
I better stay around and love you
Do you think I have a case?
Let me ask you to your face:
"Do you think you love me?
I think I love you!"
"I think I love you . . ."
Notes
“I Think I Love You” was written by Tony Romeo for The Partridge Family in 1970. It became a #1 hit for The Partridge Family and David Cassidy. The album reached #4 on the Billboard chart.
“The Partridge Family” television series ran for four years from 1970 to 1974. The show was loosely patterned after the real-life singing family, The Cowsills. “The Partridge Family” was about a single mom and her five children who drove a colorful bus to various singing engagements. The show starred Shirley Jones, David Cassidy, Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, Jeremy Gelbwaks, Suzanne Crough, and Dave Madden. The series ended when David Cassidy decided to pursue a solo career rather than continue with the TV role as Keith Partridge.
Among The Partridge Family regulars, Shirley Jones and David Cassidy were singers but none of the other actors actually played their instruments. Nevertheless, during the run of “The Partridge Family” TV series, 10 albums were released.
David Cassidy is the son of Jack Cassidy and Evelyn Ward. He is the stepson of Shirley Jones, the result of her marriage to Jack Cassidy in 1956. David Cassidy was hired for the TV series based on his acting, not his singing. In fact, nobody knew that he could sing until he brought up the subject. He was so good that he became the lead singer for the group.
David Cassidy became a teen idol, and at the height of his popularity he was the highest paid live entertainer. His official fan club became larger than that of either Elvis Presley or The Beatles.
Shirley Jones was named after Shirley Temple and was a beauty pageant winner as a teenager in Pittsburgh. Shirley Jones starred in many movies prior to her role in “The Partridge Family.” Jones starred in Oklahoma!, Carousel, and The Music Man. She also won an Academy Award for her dramatic role in Elmer Gantry.
