(I can't stop loving you) I've made up my mind To live in memory of the lonesome times (I can't stop wanting you) It's useless to say So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday (Dreams of yesterday)
Those happy hours that we once knew Though long ago, they still make me blue They say that time heals a broken heart But time has stood still since we've been apart
(I can't stop loving you) I've made up my mind To live in memories of the lonesome times (I can't stop wanting you) It's useless to say So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday
(Those happy hours) Those happy hours (That we once knew) That we once knew (Though long ago) Though long ago (Still make me blue) Still make me blue (They say that time) They say that time (Heals a broken heart) Heals a broken heart (But time has stood still) Time has stood still (Since we've been apart) Since we've been apart
(I can't stop loving you) I said I made up my mind To live in memory of the lonesome times
Sing a song, children (I can't stop wanting you) It's useless to say So I'll just live my life of dreams of yesterday (Of yesterday)
Notes
"I Can't Stop Loving You" was recorded by Ray Charles in 1962. It was Ray Charles' first gold record and it won the Grammy award in 1962 for Best Rhythm and Blues Recording.
"I Can't Stop Loving You" was written by a country singer, Don Gibson, who also recorded it that year. Gibson also wrote "Oh Lonesome Me" on the same day, and his recording of that song hit #7 on the charts.
Kitty Wells also recorded "I Can't Stop Loving You" in 1958, and her version was on the charts at the same time as Gibson's version.
Originally, "I Can't Stop Loving You" was not released as a single, but it received lots of radio air play from the album. Tab Hunter recorded his version and rushed it out as a single, so Ray Charles had his record company edit the album version as a single and got it on the market as quickly as possible. He supported the release with a full page ad in "Billboard" magazine.
Charles' single version of "I Can't Stop Loving You" became a #1 hit in the U.S. and UK. It was #1 for 5 weeks in the U.S. and was listed on the Pop, R&B, and Easy Listening charts.
Ray Charles surprised everybody when he released an album of country and western songs. He was known primarily as a gospel and R&B artist.
