The Dating Advisor, Newsletter - Valentine's Day February 14, 2006 |
| Helping you to enjoy Online Dating.
Welcome to all! It's Valentine's Day! In this issue are some great ideas for a romantic movie to share, a romantic poem to read to a special someone, and a love song to get you in the mood. I've included my current favorite love poem, "i carry your heart with me" by E. E. Cummings. This is one of his most famous poems and was used with great dramatic effect in the recent movie, "In Her Shoes." Michael Hedges has set the lyrics of the poem to music on his "Taproot" album, which is available through Amazon.com. Hedges himself sings the lead, but the backing vocals are sung by David Crosby and Graham Nash. The poem is used twice near the end of the movie, "In Her Shoes," a touching movie about several kinds of love. Carmen Diaz recites the poem at the wedding of Toni Collette, her sister in the movie. It's a very touching moment that has inspired many to search out the lyrics of the poem.
Another interesting feature of the movie is the use of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe." It's used very effectively in the movie. I've included it here in case you've forgotten the lyrics. Enjoy the following features of The Dating Advisor and keep your spirits high! In This Issue

3) Do's and Don'ts For Replying to Personal Ads by Tracy Brant You may have a great personal ad... and a wonderful smiling photo to go with your ad... but things can still fall apart if you are sending out an awkward first message in response to other people's ads. What can you do to make that first message work for you? DO: Write in advance. This lets you think about what you want to say about yourself and, more importantly, check your spelling and grammar. Have a friend read and react to your draft message. Spellcheck. Yes, this counts. It shows that you are serious about finding dates and willing to pay attention to details. Some people are just natural bad spellers, but it can make you look less smart or less educated than you really are. Most websites do not offer spellchecking of profiles.
Personalize! We recommend writing a general template of a first message, but you have to personalize it for each person you contact. Mention something from their profile, ask a question that refers to something they wrote, or describe how you would be a good match for them. Mention what attracted your attention to their ad. No one wants to think they just received a form letter.
4) i carry your heart with me by E. E. Cummings Love poems have the power to inspire us and to warm our hearts. We should take a few minutes each day to recall an inspirational line or stanza.
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
5) Cyrano de Bergerac Movie Review Have you ever felt tongue-tied while trying to say the right romantic words to someone you love? Christian had that problem too, but luckily he had Cyrano to help him out--the perfect mentor.
Listen to and marvel at the great words that Cyrano is able to say to his love, Roxanne, through Christian. Ever wish you could talk that way? Edmond Rostand's ineffably romantic play about the big-nosed soldier and swordsman with a poet's soul looks stagey in this 1950 film adaptation. But, thanks to a heartfelt performance by Jose Ferrer (who won an Oscar for the role), the beauty of Rostand's words shines through. Ferrer plays Cyrano, who is in love with the beautiful Roxanne but is unable to tell her so for fear that she will reject him because of his extremely prominent nose. In a heart-breaking turn, she confesses her love to him--but it is love for another man, a soldier under his command named Christian. Christian, however, is a good-hearted but tongue-tied youngster, and so the older Cyrano woos Roxanne vicariously by supplying Christian with his own words of love, most famously in a balcony scene in which Cyrano speaks for himself while pretending to be Christian. Ferrer is tender, tough, and funny and single-handedly pulls this film to near-greatness. -- Marshall Fine
6) Love Song This song is a standard of sorts. It combines humor and personality with a warm thought. That thought gets repeated, and repeated, and repeated. But you gotta love it.
[HER:] They say we're young and we don't know
[HIM:] Babe
[HER:] They say our love won't pay the rent
[HIM:] Babe
[HIM:] I got flowers in the spring I got you to wear my ring
[HIM:] Babe
[HIM:] I got you to hold my hand
[BOTH:] I got you babe
That's all for now. Make it a great week. Mark |
